Pour-Over with the V60: A Step-by-Step Guide
Ratio, grind and pour technique for consistent filter coffee at home.
Why V60?
Among filter methods, the V60 gives you the most control. Its cone shape and spiral ribs speed up flow, which means grind size and pour rate shape the cup directly.
Ratio and Grind
Start at 1:16 — 15 grams of coffee to 250 grams of water. Grind medium-fine; table salt is a useful reference.
Step by Step
- Bloom: Pour 30–40 grams, wait 30 seconds. The bed will rise as gas escapes.
- First pour: Spiral from centre outward up to 150 grams.
- Second pour: Top up to 250 grams.
- Total time: Aim for 2:30 – 3:00.
Troubleshooting
Sour and thin means under-extraction: grind finer or raise the water temperature. Bitter and heavy means the opposite — grind coarser.
Conclusion
The V60 has a learning curve but rewards it. Brew the same beans a few days in a row and the difference becomes obvious.
